About the Artist - Sue Johnson

I have always had a passion for horses. One of my earliest memories as a little girl involved Annie, a draft-type workhorse that my dad used on the farm. I was thrilled each time he would hoist me up onto Annie’s broad, sweaty back among all the leather harness trappings while he plowed the rows of the family garden. I loved it! That memory still evokes the sensations, sounds, scents and feelings associated with happy childhood moments. I guess one of the reasons I never enjoyed painting equine art on canvas, was because it lacked the feel, texture and smell of leather.

This summer, I had fun creating and burning the image of a beloved horse on a jacket and bag for Miss Rodeo America. It’s always very special and satisfying to be able to capture the look and personality of different horses.

So, no more dabbling with different art materials and mediums. I have found my artistic voice in leathers and suedes, branded with a horse!
